Jiuzhaigou vs Huanglong in Winter: Which Should You Visit?
① Jiuzhaigou stays fully open with shuttle buses, blue ice and frozen waterfalls — pick it for families and first-timers.
② Huanglong is open and cheaper, but its cable car stops 16 Dec – 31 Mar, so you climb at 3,200–3,600 m on foot.
③ Short answer: visit Jiuzhaigou in winter; save Huanglong for late Nov or spring unless you’re fit and well prepared.

What Jiuzhaigou costs in winter
- Ticket ~80 + shuttle ~80 (off season) = ~160; optional insurance ~10
- For comparison, peak season (1 Apr – 15 Nov) is ticket ~169 + shuttle ~90
- Shuttle buses keep running, so you ride between the valleys instead of walking everything
What Huanglong costs in winter — and the catch
- Winter ticket ~60 (off season from 16 Dec)
- But the Hongyanguan cable car — ~80 up, ~40 down in season — stops from 16 Dec to 31 Mar
- Without it, you walk up and down the valley at over 3,200 m; the park can also close after heavy snow
Which one fits you?
| You are… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Travelling with children or elders | Jiuzhaigou — lower altitude, shuttle buses |
| First time in the region | Jiuzhaigou — the reliable, iconic choice |
| Fit, want quiet and fewer people | Huanglong — but expect a cold, high climb |
| Set on seeing both | 1 full day Jiuzhaigou; Huanglong before 16 Dec or in spring |
How to fit both into a trip
The parks are about 100 km apart (roughly a 2-hour drive). A comfortable plan is a full day at Jiuzhaigou, then Huanglong on the way back — but treat winter Huanglong as weather-dependent. To use the cable car, schedule it in late November (before 16 December) or wait for spring.
- Planning a winter Huanglong day for elders or young kids — the cable car is closed and the climb is strenuous.
- Not checking the official notice — strong winds and snow can shut either park at short notice.
- Arriving and expecting to “decide on the day” — winter tickets and vehicles are easier arranged in advance.
- Underestimating altitude: even Jiuzhaigou is above 2,000 m, so take the first day slowly.
For Muslim families
- Halal food is limited in the mountain area; we arrange halal meals in the towns and pack food for park days. See our halal transparency system.
- Prayer: few spaces inside the parks; we time the day around prayer times and arrange a quiet place.
- Warmth: well below freezing at altitude — see our winter packing guide.
