Reference figures for 2026–2027; confirm on the official site before booking.

1. Xiling Snow Mountain — the default family choice

Just 2.5 hours from Chengdu, with a ski resort, snow play areas and two cable cars. Snow is reliable from December to March, and it’s the easiest option for children and first-timers. A weekday ski package (entry + cable car + 3 h skiing) runs around 398; skiing alone is ~120/2 h with gear included. Avoid weekends and holidays — tickets rise and queues are long.

2. Zhegu Mountain — best value for beginners

Ticket ~68 plus a ~40 shuttle (there’s no walking path, so it’s required). An all-day ski package is ~288 on weekdays and ~328 on weekends, including skis, boots, poles and the magic carpet. Gear hire is extra — ski suit ~50, helmet/gloves ~10. A good pick if the main goal is skiing without the Xiling crowds.

3. Mount Emei — the comfortable, rail-accessible option

You can reach Emeishan Station by high-speed rail, which is ideal for travelers who don’t want a long mountain drive. The Golden Summit gets snow, rime and frozen temples; off-season entry is ~110 and the cable car is ~30 up. The annual ice-and-hot-spring festival opens around mid-December, so you can pair a snowy summit with a hot spring. Shuttle buses are ~90 for the full mountain.

4. Bipenggou — ice waterfalls and rime

About 3.5 hours out, with ticket + shuttle around 130 and an optional electric cart (~60) — you can walk instead. Best for frozen waterfalls, rime-covered trees and quiet winter scenery; less about skiing, more about landscape.

5. Mount Siguniang — the scenic, photogenic pick

Shuangqiao Valley (entry ~80, shuttle ~70) gives a close look at dramatic snow peaks and is the most accessible valley; it’s a 4-hour drive. Great for photography and scenery, but it’s a longer road and colder than Xiling.

6. Wanggangping — quiet views of Gongga

A lesser-known spot around 3.5 hours from Chengdu, with a cable car to about 2,400–2,800 m and clear views of Mount Gongga. A combo ticket is ~298 (about 30 cheaper booked on the official WeChat account). Choose it for fewer crowds and a moderate altitude.

7. Dagu Glacier — the high-altitude showpiece

A 15-minute cable car (the world’s highest passenger lift) takes you to a 4,860 m viewpoint. Entry ~110, shuttle ~70, cable car ~180. It’s spectacular, but this is the highest altitude on the list and the most likely to cause altitude sickness — short stays, slow movement, and not ideal for elders or young children.

Common mistakes

  • Weekends/holidays at Xiling — higher prices and hours in queues; pick a weekday.
  • Self-driving on icy mountain bends — use experienced private transport.
  • Booking Dagu for elders or small children without accounting for altitude.
  • Expecting halal food up the mountain — it’s limited, so arrange meals first.

For Muslim families

  • Halal food is limited on all these mountains; we arrange meals or pack food — see our halal transparency system.
  • We plan prayer breaks and shorter days in the short winter daylight.
  • Warm, waterproof clothing is essential — see our winter packing guide.
